LASIK Eye Surgery

See A Whole New World

Wow, that is a broad question to ask. It depends on what you need done and the quality of the office you are going to. I would recommend going to maloneyvision.com and read about what to look for in a surgeon….there is a lot of info on the site and this is the best laser surgery office in CA….they are in LA. I do not work for them. Really. I live about 2 hours away, but I know that the doctor I work for refers to them a lot, and he also refers people to get help that have had problems with surgeries form cheap places! So….get the best you can afford! You only have this one set of eyes!

lasik surgery?

i have vision problems and considering eye surgery. does anyone know anything about having lasik surgery (lazer surgery)? advantages/disadvantages? anyone out there HAD lasik done?

It is the best thing ever!!!! After wearing glasses/contacts for 25 years I really didn’t know what it was like to be able to "see". I couldn’t even see that big letter E without squinting! My vision is now 20/20 and I love being able to wake up and actually see the time on my alarm clock!!! It is so easy and sooooo worth it! Go for it and good luck!

I am 34yrs old. I’m interested to go for lasik surgery, can anyone recommend lasik surgeon? If you had gone thru surgery before pls tell me about your experience. What is your success rate? Total cost of surgery? Is it better to go to polyclinic first to get recommendation so that we can get subsidise?

Lasik and other corrective eye surgeries are considered to be ‘cosmetic surgery’; you will not be eligible for subsidies nor can you use your Medisave, unless the surgery is done for ‘medical reasons’ e.g. you are visually handicapped and lasik is the only option left.

The only hospital I know that does corrective eye surgery is the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), next to the Singapore General Hospital. I am very sure they are not the only institution in Singapore that does it but I do not know of any other hospitals.

Cost varies depending on which procedure you elect to have performed on you and the most appropriate procedure is again determined by the condition of your eyes. SNEC has a pre-operation consultation where your eyes will be subjected to a battery of tests to determine their suitability for corrective eye surgery, as well as a talk with a counsellor to ensure you know the details and risks of the surgery.

I’m scheduled for the custom Lasik surgery on Tuesday and was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with laser eye correction, good or bad, just share with me if you would.

Thanks!

yes i did 8 years ago. i love it. you will feel NO pain. you may smell something and you will see grey for a second or so, but its over before you know it. trust me i am a big chicken. and i was fine. i was a -4.25 and now after 8 years i am a -50 i am older now and being in my 40s i can see a little of a change but that comes with age. i know you will love it. good luck. oh your eyes are a little tender for a couple of weeks and you may have some visual changes (nothing big) because your eyes are healing.

my eye sight is HORRIBLE.
i wear glasses but i hate them and im considering contacts.
but is lasik the only way your eyes will ever be perfect again?

LASIK eye surgery is a medical procedure that can correct your vision by altering the physical properties of your eye. Unlike traditional surgical procedures that depend upon the skills and steadiness of the surgeon’s hand, advanced LASIK eye surgery is computer controlled.

But that is not the only option to regain your vision, there are many more types of eye surgery procedures which produce the same result as that of LASIK. Like:

* PRK laser eye surgery
* LASEK
* CUSTOM VUE LASIK
* Or you can wear Corrective Lenses

Most preferred is LASIK surgery as it is quick and painless, usually being performed on an out-patient basis. In most cases, you’ll notice an immediate improvement in vision and the procedure is virtually painless, taking only a few minutes to complete.

I want to get good medical insurance so lasik surgery isn’t so expensive as well as good dental because cavitys are way too easy for me to get. Any suggestions?

Currently LASIK is not fully covered by any insurance. Some will cover up to $1500. Usually with that LASIK centers will have you pay the full amount up front and will give you a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

LASIK is still considered elective surgery.

Most centers though offer financing plans (there are some that do 18 months interest free).

The reason why I ask is because I am getting PRK done in 12 days and I also have a PT test coming up in approximately 6 weeks. I don’t want to get the surgery right now if it’s going to hinder my ability to take my APFT.

Thanks in advance!

30 days from time of surgery for my PRK I had done in April 2008. You will have to bring in all of your surgery and post-op notes from the doctor up to one month afterwards to be cleared. If you are getting it done at a military treatment facility, you will get all this done by them.
Make sure to have the 2-3 days after your surgery as time off. I slept those two days and just laid around the house with my sunglasses on and drank plenty of water. It wasnt bad, and to not have to worry about glasses now, is beyond words awesome. Good luck with it and hope you get the results I did..

I went from -7 in both eyes to 20/20 in both..magic!

Periodontal disease according to The Guinness Book of world records is the most common infectious disease affecting mankind. The surgeon General has estimated that 80% of adult Americans have some form of gum disease. Healthcare costs could be reduced by focusing on the mouth. Medical insurance companies are saying we can save 4 to 1. That is, for every dollar invested in dental care they are saving $4 in medical costs.

The cost for treating diabetes is around $174 billion in the U.S. annually. Extrapolate what Columbia University and Aetna Medical found in their research that costs for diabetes care could be reduced by as much as 16 percent by treating gum disease. Take into consideration the Surgeon Generals estimate that gum disease affects approximately 80 percent of the U.S. population. Thus the potential savings by treating gum disease are approximately $22 billion.

This does not include the savings for cardiovascular disease, a probable savings of 11 percent, or another 9 percent for cerebral vascular disease or stroke. The same Aetna and Columbia University studies found that treating gum disease can reduce preterm low birth-weight babies by 50 percent. Preterm low birth-weight births account for more than 12 percent of all births, $13 billion annually in hospitalizations and uncounted social costs since babies born prematurely often require years of care. The whole total of dental expenditures in the U.S is approximately $75 billion annually. Only 3%, according to Dental Insurance statistics, is spent on periodontal disease. In other words only $2 Billion is spent on gum disease annually.

The important thing to take from this is to know your periodontal score. Unfortunately, gum disease does not hurt. When you visit your dentist make sure your gum pockets are being measured. The dentist needs to take six measurements per tooth. This score has been shown to be more important to your general health than your cholesterol level, body mass index, or blood pressure.

Remember that your gums should never bleed when you brush and floss thoroughly, no more than your hands should bleed when you wash them.
A new breakthrough in the treatment of Gum disease is Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure LANAP. The Laser has been found to regenerate the attachment around the tooth.
