LASIK Eye Surgery

See A Whole New World

Archive for December, 2009

About £500-1200 per eye? Depending on how you want it done?

I would not go for surgery at the moment… its very dodgy.

basicaly some guy is going to zap your eyes with laser beams! They will burn out flaps in your eyes, or even use a knife to cut it.

And it is not guranteed to fix vision PLUS causes other problems.

Problems may outweigh the benefits e.g. v. dry eyes, worse night vision, severe prolonged headaches, bursts of vision loss (i.e. going blind for 2-5 seconds!!), redness of eyes, irritation, double vision…. very blurry vision, and worst, severe eye-infection that will lead to 100% blindness.

Overall, wait, not worth the risks unless you REALLY need them.

Some jobs e.g. army prohibit eye surgery for these very reasons, they may cause DAMAGE that can NEVER be repaired.

How much does it cost? Also are there different kinds and forms of this surgery?
surgery for both eyes…

That depends. For the best doctors with the latest technology it will cost you around $5,000 for both eyes. If you want costum bladeless Lasik it might go as high as $8,000 for both eyes.

It can also go as cheap as $2,000 for both eyes. But these are your EYES and you only get one set. I say $5,000 to $8,000 for peace of mind is better than $2,000 and a lifetime of eye problems.

It also depends on where you live. But expect to pay in the $4,000 to $7,000 range for a GOOD doctor.

There are about 3 or 4 different forms of Laser surgery. I’m not an expert but I believe its:

Lasek
Lasik
Intra-Lase
PRK

I heard that if you have LASIK surgery, you can no longer ride a rollercoaster, pilot an airplane, or even ride a car with the top down. The so-called reason is that the flap in your eye created by the laser might open up again or come loose in the event of high-G forces or gusts of wind. Is this really true? I love roller coasters but am thinking about getting LASIK myself and would love to know the true answer to this myth.

Good heavens. Someone is apparently trying to scare you away from Lasik, is completely uninformed, or both.

I work for a nonprofit Lasik patient advocacy. We don’t provide Lasik. We provide Lasik information and certify Lasik doctors’ patients’ results.

The first step in Lasik laser vision correction is to create a thin flap of corneal tissue. The flap is moved aside, laser energy is applied, and then the flap is repositioned over the treatment area. By applying the laser energy to the inner portion of the cornea the eye is "fooled" into not realizing it has had surgery. This mutes the wound response and contributes to Lasik’s rapid vision recovery and general lack of pain.

http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik.htm

Within minutes of flap repositioning the flap has adhered to the underlying cornea due to the natural suction created by the cornea absorbing oxygen into the eye. This is why you can blink immediately after Lasik and not dislodge the flap.

Within a few days a seal around the edge of the flap begins to form. This seal eventually acts like the lid on a Tupperware bowl to strongly adhere the flap to the underlying corneal surface. For a detailed explanation of the Lasik flap healing process visit:

http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-flap-heal.htm

The United States military has approved Lasik for fighter pilots, who experience significantly greater G-forces than you would experience on a roller coaster. Special service branches of the military, such as Navy SEALS are able to have Lasik. This is a group in extreme environments. At a recent US Food and Drug Administration hearing David J. Tanzer, M.D., Commander, Medical Corps, US Navy, and a Lasik surgeon extolled the virtues of Lasik and similar refractive surgery for US troops.

http://tinyurl.com/3s6×3y for Dr. Tanzer’s presentation to the FDA.

There are about 1 million Lasik surgeries throughout the world each year. If the Lasik flap was going to flap in the wind when riding in a convertible with the top down, don’t you think you would have heard about it on the news? I suspect that if Tiger Woods’ Lasik flap dislodged – or the flap of other prominent sports personalities, movie stars, police, fire fighters, and others who have had successful Lasik – you would hear about it.

Although the Lasik flap does heal, the cornea is always different after Lasik. Once you have had Lasik, you have always had Lasik. Significant trauma to the eye can dislodge the Lasik flap. Fortunately this is relatively rare and if the flap is intact it can commonly be repositioned and will heal.

If you are involved in activities and sports where trauma to the face and eyes is very likely, such as a professional fighter, then Lasik may not be appropriate because of the high probability that you will suffer blows to the eye. Even if a problem is unlikely, it seems prudent to consider Lasik alternatives such as PRK, LASEK, and Epi-Lasik. These techniques, commonly known as surface ablation, do not require the Lasik flap. The patient will have a much longer vision recovery and more discomfort, but laser vision correction without a flap is available.

I’m aware of looking for experience in LASIK locations but what else is a helpful sign of a good LASIK doctor? Is it the number of offices; the price; the number of doctors; etc.

Never assume that a doctor is good based on the number of offices he has, what he charges, the advertising he does, etc. The best way to find a good lasik surgeon is to do your homework and to know exactly what to look for and what to ask. These sites should be of great help to you:

Also, do not be afraid to ask the doctor for references from those on who he has performed the procedure. Also, you would be amazed how many people had the surgery done so ask around! Someone you know will know someone who had it done and can talk to you about it and who performed it.

government knows eyesight can be improved because they use it in the air force,

so i don’t know who else is playing the game, but once someone find more evidence, we will not give mercy to this fraud industry

I have an appointment for lasik eye consultation. I understand they’re going to dialate my pupils but will I be able to go back to work the same day? Has anyone had this done before? Please share your experience. I’m trying to decide if I need to take half the day off work. Thanks.

The dilating and measuring is not much different from a routine (yearly) visit. If you normally need a ride home, you probably want to ask someone to go with.

If you work in a place that uses your vision a lot- if you’re at a computer or if you read a lot – you’ll be good for nothing the rest of the day. lol. It always takes me a few hours for everything to go back to normal.

I had lasik surgery a few years back. Shoot me an email if you have questions…good luck!

I am thinking of getting this surgery and all the websites I look at say "it depends" when it comes to cost- I just need a ballpark figure for a well-reputed surgeon in the Socal area. Also, any recommendations of surgeons (or ones to avoid!) are appreciated! Thanks!

wave front lasik will cost around $4500.00. I was a -10.5 in my left eye and a -11.25 in my right, now i am 20/20

Please i just want to know how long to wait after having lasik surgery done. Its been about a week and 2 weeks can anyone tell me if its ok to wear a contact lens. What are the risks and can i pull the flap off the eye still?

i wouldn’t pull the flap off and it shouldn’t take one year to heal !!

if you did pull it off, it would take one week for the surface of the cornea to fully grow back and your chance of an infection is huge

ring your eye surgeon, that’s what he is there for. he knows your situation.

I wear eye contact lenses but I heard that wearing them for a long time may cause trouble when I’m going to do the lasek Surgery for my eyes…Is it true?

When you are scheduled to do LASIK/LASEK/PRK, your doctor usually tells you to refrain form wearing contacts for 2 weeks prior to your surgery. That applies to soft contact lens users. If you are a RGP/Hard contact lens user, typically you should not wear them for about 2 months. Most doctors recommend even longer periods of time if you are wearing RGP’s.

This is becuase when you wear contact lenses, especially RGP’s, they cause your cornea to form to the shape of the contact over time. If youo dont wear ocntacts for a long time, your coneas gradully revert to its original form. This is important becuase it is essential to have a cornea that is in its original state to get optimum visual acutity with your LASIK.

I’ve been looking into it for a while and I think for me it would be a really good idea. However it might be more pricey for me due to how bad my eyes are. I’m nearsighted and my prescription is -11 in each eye (-20 is blind). So I was wondering if anyone has gotten it and know how much it can run for really bad eyes? thanks!

One thing you need to remember about these places that advertise this procedure for ridiculously low prices is that it is often a bait-and-switch operation. What they don’t tell you is that the procedure will cost considerably more if you have a strong prescription.

I’m not considered to be a good candidate for it because my eyes are too dry. Even if I were, I still wouldn’t have it done. That’s because at my age, I would still have to wear glasses no matter what I decide to do. I have the choice between wearing my usual glasses or having to get a pair of reading glasses, which is something I haven’t needed so far.
